The Newmarket BID creates a clean, safe and vibrant environment for everyone who lives, works and does business in the neighborhood. To that end, here are some of the major initiatives that the BID has undertaken to enhance the quality of life in our District.
Recover Boston is a comprehensive plan for a temporary substance abuse disorder recovery campus to bridge the current gap in services until the Long Island Recovery Campus and the Shattuck Hospital Homeless/Recovery Campus are completed. Designed as a multi-stage process to progress with each patient through every step of their recovery journey, Recover Boston has received tremendous support from neighborhood organizations, elected officials, advocates, and medical professionals.
From 2019 to 2023, the City of Boston undertook a major planning study to reshape zoning throughout our District. Spanning five years, three mayors, and the COVID-19 pandemic, PLAN Newmarket was officially adopted by the Boston Zoning Commission on January 10, 2024. The final plan is the result of a close partnership between City planners and the BID’s staff and stakeholders, and will be instrumental in guiding the future of Newmarket.
In early 2021, the Newmarket Business Improvement District began a workforce development program for the homeless focused on providing low-threshold same-day work for individuals experiencing shelter instability, homelessness and/or a substance use disorder. In the first three years of the program, we have worked with over 100 individuals, have assisted two-thirds of them with entering substance abuse treatment programs, and have assisted one-third with finding permanent employment with other businesses or City of Boston agencies.

In 2020, the Newmarket Jobs Initiative was begun with the mission to hire local talent from the neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan into full-time jobs with our member and partner businesses. In the first 2 years of operation, the Newmarket Jobs Initiative was considered a resounding success with over 100 job-seekers being placed into fulfilling new careers that span entry-level, blue-collar, and professional positions averaging $40,000 a year.
